Cleaning and Sealing Polished Travertine, is it Wrong?

Cleaning and sealing polished travertine is crucial for preserving its shiny finish. While it might seem that cleaning polished travertine could risk damaging the stones’ sheen it actually does the opposite. Overtime, dirt, grime, oils and acids build up on the stones surface, causing the shine to turn dull. Cleaning removes the buildup and reduces risk of permanent damage. Sealant then protects and slows the wearing, although you should still routinely clean and seal your travertine.

When Should You Clean and Seal Travertine?

Cleaning and sealing travertine is recommended every 1-3 years. With travertine being a natural stone, its more delicate than porcelain or ceramic and prone to damage, staining or discoloration. Regularly cleaning and maintaining your travertine will ensure it is safe and protected from potential wear and increase its overall lifespan! Don’t wait for it to become a problem, get it cleaned and sealed as soon as possible!

FAQ

Your travertine will remain clean for as long as you can keep it clean! There is no way to predetermine this. You can maintain your travertine’s appearance for much longer by following our maintenance steps provided at the end of our service visit.

This is completely preference. Whether you would want something matte finish or mirror finish we can deliver. If you are seeking longevity we generally recommend a medium finish because you still have the benefits of a shinier floor without it deteriorating as quickly as a high gloss finish. Mirror finishes look great but will immediately show any scratches or blemishes.

The time it takes to complete the process is completely dependent on the amount of square footage and how much cleaning is required.

Please call for a more accurate estimate, we would be happy to help!

With travertine being a very porous stone, its important to routinely have it sealed. We recommend sealing your travertine tile every 1-3 years to ensure it is safe and protected from any water damage or etching. Travertine requires a natural stone impregnating sealant.

Travertine Cleaning Maintenance

Maintaining cleaned and sealed travertine isn’t a complicated task. There are a couple of important measures to take to ensure your travertine lasts as long as possible.

DO:

  • Use a neutral-pH cleaning solution
  • Use room temperature or cold water to protect stone sealer
  • Use non-abrasive mops or scrubbers (string mop is highly recommended)
  • Clean no more than 1-2 times per month or only when necessary

DON’T:

  • Use acidic or high-alkaline cleaning solutions
  • Use warm water, hot water or steam
  • Use abrasive or wired brushes
  • Scrub aggressively or for a prolonged period.

If followed correctly, your polished travertine will easily last you its intended life span.

How To Tell If You Have Travertine in Your Home.

Determining whether or not your tile floor is travertine or man-made faux travertine can be tricky. Don’t fear, we can help you figure it out!

First, does the tile have small pitting throughout the floor? Usually, this is a good indicator to determine if your tile is real travertine. The next identifier would be to make sure there aren’t visible pixels on your tile. Man-made travertine tiles are usually porcelain or ceramic tiles with a travertine pattern printed on. Third, many homes in Scottsdale use travertine or other natural stones such as marble. Travertine does occur in Phoenix homes, but is less common.
